Netflix

Netflix users have full control over what to watch at any time of day. However, what do users do when they've finished their latest show and want to quickly find something new that grabs their attention? Netflix does not have a feature that helps with this problem and users are left to watch at least 2 hours of a show before deciding to commit to it.

This Netflix case study introduces the discover feature for the living room experience to solve this problem. The feature is meant to intrigue users in finding new shows that they have not been introduced to in more than half the time. The intended goal is to have users connect and enjoy the full offering of Netflix content, whereas the business goal is to maintain and extend user engagement.

To better align with Netflix's brand identity, the login screen has been designed to have strengthen unity between brand and product. The visuals tie smoothly with the mood and energy of Netflix. Oddly, the current Netflix UI does not represent the Netflix logo anywhere on this state.

The navigation has been revamped to bucket items according to specific user intentions. 'Browse' contains Netflix's extensive list of streaming content paired with 'My List' and 'Search'. Users have the ability to use microphone-equipped devices to search their favorite shows and movies.

Discover

Discover

Stop scrolling through lists upon lists of titles that serve no use to you and start experiencing them instead. The Discover screen provides curated, personalized content to satisfy your viewing itch. Social integration allows users to see what their friends are watching and serves as a more personal guide for selecting content.

Discover Reel

This page is what brings the experience to life. Users are brought to a full screen sneak peek of a show/movie they have yet to see with social integration. Users are able to see the show/movie's title and key art along with which of their friends are watching. The introduction of social is important in connecting users with trusted friends and not depending on overall ratings from unfamililar users.

The clips shown to the users focus on the show's most intense, memorable scenes that have been tested to hold maintain and hold attention.  The length of the clips ranges from 15-20 seconds long, similar to Snapchat and Instagram timing to ensure users are being presented with a wide variety of content they are drawn to.

The discover reel is the window users view new content and determine if the want to dive in and explore more.
